Schizophrenia can be described as a ‘functional disorder of psychotic depth, characterized by
hallucinations, distorted perceptions of reality, disturbed
behaviour, disordered thought and delusional ideation (ideas/beliefs)’. Social skills are markedly disturbed
and a general deterioration in functioning is evident. Some of the very noticeable signs are the loss of social
functioning, often withdrawal & isolation, progressively poor hygiene, disorganization, poor concentration
& attention, failure to maintain academic and sporting standards etc.
Approximately 1% of the population suffer from Schizophrenia. In
Australia that equates to more than 200,000 people.
