Between 1998 and 2005, more than 2,000 people have died by suicide each year. This equates to 1 - 2% of all deaths in Australia in this time.

In 2005, 19.3% of all deaths for deaths for males in the age group 15 – 19 years was suicide

For age group 20 – 24, the rate was 27.1% & for the 25 – 29 year group, the rate was 24.2%

There were 2,101 deaths by suicide in 2005, with nearly 80% of these being males

Males & Youth are the main risk groups

Overall, males born outside Australia have a lower suicide rate than Australian-born males. The contrary applies to females.

There is strong evidence to suggest that mental health problems are major contributors to suicidal behaviours in people of all ages. More than 90% of people who committed suicide were suffering some form of mental illness.

People with a recognised mental illness are 10 times more likely to take their own lives than the general population.

For every completed suicide, there are over 30 attempts. This equates to over 210 people per day attempting suicide.

There are 8.5 times more deaths by suicide in Australia than by homicide

There are 1.5 times more deaths by suicide in Asutralia than by road accidents.

Male suicides outnumber female suicides by a ration of 4:1

For every completed male suicide, there are five (5) attempts

Suicide is the leading external cause of death among males aged 25 - 44 years.

Youth suicide accounts for 16.6% of the total number of suicides in 1998.

The majority of Rugby League players fall into these demographics, ie….age & gender
