·         By the year 2020, Depression will be the number two (2) illness in the world. Recent trends suggest that this may occur much earlier. 

 

·         Suicide accounted for more than 23% of ALL deaths in Australia in 2005 for males between the age of 15 and 29.

 

·         85% of those Suicides in Australia were males. 

 

·         There were more than 2,000 deaths by suicide in Australia in 2005. 

 

·         Death by suicide in Australia exceeds motor vehicle fatalities. Many also believe that a number of road fatalities are questionably suicide in some instances. 

 

·         On any one (1) given day, more than 100 Million people in the world will suffer depression or depressive symptomatology. 

 

·         The World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2004 updated its “Years lost due to Disability”(YLD) in ‘The global burden of disease’ report. It is a measurement of years of healthy life lost through times spent in states of less than full health. “Neuropsychiatric conditions were the most significant causes of disability & accounted for 1/3 of YLD among adults aged 15 & over”. Depressive disorders were the leading cause in both male & female in high, low-medium income nation.

 

  •     Males accounted for over ¾ of all suicides in 2007.
  •     21% of all male deaths under 35 years of age were due to suicide. 
  •     Suicide in 2007 resulted in more loss of life than skin cancer & motor vehicle accidents. 
  •    " For deaths registered in 2007, 1,027 deaths were the subject of ongoing coronial investigations at the time ABS data was finalized, and had insufficient information recorded to be able to determine any cause of death……Some of these deaths may be determined a suicide after further investigation”.
