Just as with your physical condition it is essential that you
be assessed psychologically. This need not be by a psychiatrist or mental health
professional or service. It may simply be a ‘self
assessment’.
All players &
clubs accept the notion of ‘motivation’ and the use of sports
psychologists for game preparation, yet we do not, as yet, accept the concept
of mental health assessment for ‘life
preparation’.
Many of the ailments
to which we may succumb in our lives could be averted or dealt with before
they become too crippling if we participate in assessment or self
assessment.
Certain steps need to
occur or form the basis to genuine helpful
assessment.
(1)
Be honest with yourself. Take into consideration opinions of
those close to you and those you know care for your well
being.
(2)
Be prepared to accept your inadequacies, failings and
flaws.
(3)
Strive to better yourself as, not only a player, but also as a
husband, partner, father, son, employee etc. Do this also for
yourself.
(4)
Attempt to gain the necessary education & information
regarding mental health and basic ‘workings
of the mind’. Having an understanding of the effects of drugs and alcohol, relationships and personality development will help
immensely in your self
appraisal.
(5)
Be willing to accept help and assistance in achieving these
goals and with problems you might encounter.
The aim of this
process is to maximize your performance on the field and off the field.
Perfection can never be reached though that should not be used as an excuse
for not trying. We all need to strive to better ourselves, keeping in mind
that striving should not be associated with discontentment with life. You
must endeavor to be content or satisfied with where you are at any given
time, but continue to move toward goals and aspirations professionally &
personally.
It is hoped that by
means of re-occurring assessment and re-evaluation of one’s thoughts,
emotions and behaviours and the implementation of strategies to improve areas
of your life, you will be more likely to achieve a healthy, enjoyable and
fulfilling life.
